ISO 7010 M-series mandatory action labels use the internationally standardized blue circle to communicate a required action without language dependency. Under ISO 3864-1 (Safety Colours and Safety Signs), the filled circle with a blue background is the globally reserved shape for a mandatory action — an instruction the viewer must follow. Blue must cover at least 50% of the total sign area; the white pictogram is centered inside the circle.
The blue-circle format is intentionally shape-coded so that a required action is recognizable even when color vision is impaired, and is never confused with the yellow-triangle hazard format or the red circle-and-slash prohibition format. ANSI-format PPE and instructional signage (a NOTICE-style header panel, or an instructional message panel, with English text) is the North American approach to communicating a required action, and the format referenced under OSHA 29 CFR 1910 Subpart I for personal protective equipment requirements. ISO 7010 M-series labels communicate the same required action using only a registered pictogram inside a blue circle — no signal word, no language-specific text.
ANSI-format instructional labels convey the specific required action and any conditions in English, suited to US facilities with English-speaking workforces. ISO M-series labels communicate the required action in a format readable by workers regardless of language. Many OEM programs apply both on the same piece of equipment — an ANSI-format label for the full instruction text and US compliance; an ISO M-series symbol at the point of use for graphic reinforcement recognized internationally.
