ANSI Z535.4 labels follow the format specified in ANSI Z535.4 (Product Safety Signs and Labels): a color-coded signal word panel with the safety alert symbol, a pictogram panel, and a message panel. The signal word hierarchy is defined by the standard: DANGER indicates a hazardous situation that, if not avoided, will result in death or serious injury; WARNING indicates one that could result in death or serious injury; CAUTION indicates one that could result in minor or moderate injury. Color coding follows ANSI Z535.1: red for DANGER, orange for WARNING, yellow for CAUTION.
ISO 3864-2 labels follow the design principles of ISO 3864-2 (Design Principles for Product Safety Labels) and use ISO 7010-registered pictographic symbols. ISO 3864-2 specifies a yellow triangular warning format with black border and black pictogram — the same internationally recognized format used on equipment sold across North American and European markets. ISO 7010 maintains a library of standardized pictograms, giving each registered symbol a consistent visual meaning across languages and markets.

Larger ANSI format labels (2″×4″ and above) accommodate a full signal word panel, symbol, and message panel sized per the legibility-distance guidance in ANSI Z535.4, which relates letter height to the maximum distance from which the label needs to be read.
