The label should be at or immediately adjacent to the nip point — on the guard panel closest to the in-running point, where a worker would see it before reaching toward the hazard. OSHA identifies inrunning nip points as a primary machine guarding concern; the label must be visible at the location where access would occur, not only on an outer enclosure away from the hazard.
Pinch point hazards involve a drawing-in nip action between two moving objects — belt and pulley, chain and sprocket, gear mesh. Crush hazards involve a single moving element pressing against a stationary surface. Some mechanisms present both at the same location; combination labels that show both pictograms are available for those points.
The 3M polyester construction with aggressive adhesive bonds to painted and powder-coated metal guard surfaces and resists the vibration and lubricant mist typical of guards mounted near chain drives, belts, and rollers. Wipe the surface clean and dry before application for the best long-term bond.
